Sixteen people were injured, six seriously, when two minibus taxis and an articulated truck collided in Pinetown on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

The cause of the collision and the events leading up to it remain unclear, said Netcare911 spokesman Jeff Wicks.

The accident happened at the junction of the M13 and M1 Richmond Road.

"One taxi overturned and the other came to rest adjacent to the road. The injured had clambered from the crumpled remains of the vehicles and were strewn about the junction," said Wicks.

The injured were treated on scene before being transported to various hospitals. - Sapa
