We are pleased to announce that the 13th of March 2010 is the 7th birthday of the Arrive Alive Road Safety website.

The vision to enhance road safety awareness online started in September 2002 and we were able to launch the first version of the Arrive Alive website on the 13th of March 2003. Since this time we have made significant strides in road safety awareness and would like to reflect very briefly on some of these successes.

We have been blessed in the efforts to create an information portal on road safety and would like to express our gratitude to all those who have made this possible.

Gratitude

Our sincerest gratitude towards:

- Our road safety partners
- Our experts in different fields of law enforcement, regulation, investigation etc
- The programmers and web designers from Chillies
- The journalists and reporters from the media who have assisted in the further distribution of information
- Family and friends for words of support when the going got tough
- The public for alerting us to their needs and aspects to be given wider exposure.

Without the assistance, contribution or inspirational support from the above companies and individuals this simply would not have been possible.

Have we been successful?

We are proud to claim that that the Arrive Alive website has become a well known and recognized road safety information portal. It is however not merely via one web domain that we have been able to contribute – but through a wide variety of social media platforms, printed media, radio and even television.

The Arrive Alive website received in 2008 the Guild of Motoring Journalists [CARS] Road Safety Achievement Award. Content from the website has been included in a variety of books, magazines, websites and many company circulars.

Measurable

The best about an online initiative is that it is highly measurable. Through website analytics and many online tools we can easily establish whether we have achieved the desired search engine optimization. The Arrive Alive website is now highly searchable on the internet for any search related to road safety information. Anyone searching for road safety information will find the Arrive Alive Website!

We would like to invite everyone to share in our journey and to view information on the progress made via the following links:

- Arrive Alive 6 Year Overview
- Arrive Alive Online 2009

Transparency

It has been our objective to develop this initiative in the utmost of transparency. We have provided regular reports to the Road Safety authorities on the progress made and have always recognized the importance of close cooperation with these authorities. Every cent received and spent over the past 7years in the online road safety efforts have been included in the yearly audit.

It is our wish that the ArriveAlive.co.za road safety website and our other online road safety initiatives will contribute to greater road safety awareness and protect all our road users from injury and loss of life!

We would like to invite other to join in making this possible!!

One man was killed and nineteen others seriously injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the M25 KwaMashu Highway near Inanda this evening.

It is alleged that the fully laden minibus had been bound for Inanda when the driver lost control of the people carrier while negotiating a bend. The driver was unable to regain control and the vehicle overturned and rolled several times, many of the unrestrained passengers thrown as it spun through the air.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the injured scattered across the roadway. They set about treating the injured before they were transported by ambulance to area clinics and hospitals for the medical care they required.

The N1 highway was reopened to traffic at 17:45 on Thursday, more than 24-hours after a five vehicle pile-up closed the road, said the city of Tshwane's community safety department.

The delay in reopening the highway was caused by the need to secure a crane that was hit during the crash, said spokesperson Console Tleane.

He said the upper part of the crane had to be dismantled and no longer posed a danger.

A truck carrying a load of iron rods ploughed into a cement mixer, three other vehicles and the crane when its brakes failed at 17:00 on Wednesday.

The truck overturned and caught fire, setting alight wooden structures being used in construction on the Atterbury Road bridge.

A man was killed three people were injured in the accident.

Tleane said the road's surface had to be scraped off and relaid because of the damage caused to the tarmac in the crash.

All three north-bound lanes were now open to traffic.

Acknowledging that a number of motorists were frustrated and inconvenienced by the road closure, he said it was their safety which had been the priority and he thanked them for their co-operation and understanding.

Seven people including a young boy have been killed in a collision between a car and two trucks on the R60 between Robertson and Ashton in the Boland in the Western Cape, last night.

The accident occurred during heavy rain on a slight hill just outside Robertson on the way to Ashton. The Corolla with four men, two women and a boy of three or four years crashed head-on with a heavy duty truck.

Another truck then crashed into the accident scene. All seven occupants of the car died on the scene. The driver of the truck that collided head-on with the car, Frederik Kotze, says he saw the car overtaking another vehicle. Kotze said he tried to make space for the oncoming car but there was no room to move. His truck then collided with the car.

The road was closed for several hours after the accident. The names of the deceased have not been released due to family members not being informed yet. A case of culpable homicide has been opened and the investigation is underway.

Man killed in N1 accident

Meanwhile, the body of a man was found trapped underneath a truck which was involved in an accident on the N1 North under the Atterbury Bridge last night, Tshwane Department of Community Safety said.

The Department reported earlier that no one was killed when a truck transporting iron rods plunged into a cement-mixing truck and three other vehicles before smashing into a crane at a roadworks construction site, early yesterday evening.

It was while cleaning up the scene that the body was discovered underneath the truck, three hours after the accident happened, said spokesperson Console Tleane.

"We cannot say at this stage if the deceased was the driver of the truck because witnesses told us earlier that the truck driver fled the scene following the accident," he said.

Three more people were injured in the accident but only one of them was taken to hospital.

The road had to be closed following the accident as the truck burst into flames and overturned following the collision and left the crane 'without its legs'.

N1 highway closed overnight

10 March 2010

The N1 highway near the Attebury bridge has been closed until Thursday morning following an accident, the Tshwane department of community safety said.

The accident happened at 17:00 when the brakes of a double-trailer truck failed, said spokesperson Console Tleane.

The truck struck a cement-mixing truck and three other vehicles before colliding into a crane at a road works construction site.

"We suspect it hit the leg of the crane and it might have struck the engine or petrol tank. The truck then over-turned and caught fire," said Tleane.

"As a result of the crane losing a leg it is very vulnerable and unstable, we have decided to close both directions of the N1 at that road.

"The part of the road will be closed until Thursday or until the crane can be secured," said Tleane.

Motorists were advised to use alternative routes such as the R101.

Three people were injured in the accident. One suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Two refused treatment.

The driver of the truck was seen fleeing the scene. Police are searching for him.
