Durban - Four people have died in a car crash in Durban's Isipingo area, paramedics said on Saturday.

"It looked as if a bomb had gone off in the car as it was ripped apart and laid strewn over a large area.

"The engine and three people were flung over the bridge and landed 40m down a river bed," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Three people were declared dead on the scene and three people had been flung out of the car on impact.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the accident happened just after 05:00 on Old Main Road.

The police search and rescue team absailed down the bridge and found two seriously injured survivors and another person dead.

The victims were rushed to hospital by EMRS Ambulance service.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known but it was confirmed that eight people were occupants of a four-seater car.
