All nine occupants of two bakkies collided outside Vryburg have died, police said on Saturday.

Captain Adele Myburgh said the two bakkies collided 36 kilometres outside of Vryburg late on Friday night.

Eight people died on the scene, including two toddlers.

One man was flung out of one of the bakkies. He was taken to hospital but later died as well.

Myburgh said a policeman, who has been on the job for 23 years, said it was one of the worst accident scenes he had ever had to deal with.

She said at this stage it was unclear exactly how the accident happened but that the vehicles collided head-on. - Sapa
