Cardiac patient airlifted from a vessel at sea following a multi-agency rescue effort in Durban

At approximately 15h30 on Thursday afternoon 12 October 2017, Netcare 911 joined a multi-agency effort to rescue a cardiac patient from a vessel at sea approximately ten nautical miles from Durban.

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) received the call for assistance from the vessel and a multi-agency team was compiled including the MRCC, NSRI, Transnet Port Authority  (TNPA) and their helicopter and Netcare 911.

An Advanced Life Support paramedic joined the NRSI rescue boat and headed out to the vessel. It was then determined that strong winds and large swells would make it difficult to execute a safe rescue from the ship to the rescue craft. The helicopter was then deployed as a safer option.

Netcare 911 and NSRI personnel were flown out to sea in the TNPA helicopter and were hoisted down to the vessel. The thirty-nine-year-old man was stabilised by the team and loaded into a rescue stretcher. He was then hoisted into the helicopter and airlifted, under the constant care of the paramedic, to an awaiting Emergency Unit for further assessment and care. He was in a stable condition.

These types of scenarios are frequently carried out and trained for to ensure swift, smooth and safe operations.
