Birchwood Conference Centre in the East Rand, Johannesburg recently played host to the graduation of 90 Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) Aviation Training Academy (ATA) graduates; a remarkable achievement which will see these talented individuals entering the aviation industry in their respective disciplines.

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) accredited graduation was attended by prominent dignitaries which included ATNS interim CEO, Thomas Kgokolo, Khulile Boqwana, chairman of ATNS HRC and Caroline Karanja, IATA: Manager Industry Solutions, Africa and Middle East (AME).  Addressing the graduates and attendees, Boqwana, emphasised the importance of providing both internationally accredited theoretical and practical to strengthen the aviation industry with highly skilled individuals.

The ATNS ATA is a globally recognised training academy and has been awarded IATA's Worldwide Top Regional Training Partner for several years running. This partnership has also culminated in ATNS ATA qualifying as IATA's 2016 Premier Circle Member and is IATA Authorised Training Centre, IATA Regional Training Partner accredited.

IATA awards diplomas to those students who have successfully completed the required prerequisite/main course and other elective courses over a maximum of a three-year period. A total of four courses are therefore required to obtain a diploma in a specific field.

Diploma requirements are stringent; to successfully complete a course and receive a certificate, a student must achieve a passing mark of seventy (70) percent on any assignment or exam, except for security courses that require eighty (80) percent. To achieve a distinction, a candidate must obtain ninety (90) percent.

The ninety (90) graduates received diplomas in the following fields:

•    Diploma in Safety Management in Civil Aviation;
•    Diploma in Aviation Security Management;
•    Diploma in Project Management;
•    Diploma in Civil Aviation Management;
•    Diploma in General Management;
•    Airport Operations Foundation Diploma;
•    Diploma in Travel Consultant and Tourism;
•    Managing the Travel Business Diploma; and
•    IATA Leadership and Management Diploma.
