Gauteng: The Minister of Transport, Mr. Fikile Mbalula will, from this Thursday, 29th to the 31st of October, host and lead robust discussions with the taxi industry and key stakeholders at the National Taxi Lekgotla in Gauteng.
The National Taxi Lekgotla, is a culmination of and is anticipated to bring finality to what has been a process of District and Provincial Taxi Makgotla and public engagement undertaken across all provinces to deliberate, to debate and to consolidate inputs and recommendations from the taxi industry and key stakeholders on a taxi industry of the future in South Africa.

The discussions have laid a foundation for engagement by the taxi industry, stakeholders and civil society on the future of the largest mover of people in the country, through sharpening perspectives in engagement with industry players and opinion-makers on how best to formalise, to regulate and also importantly, developing and putting in place and into action an empowerment model for the taxi industry.

Provincial Transport MECs undertook province-wide engagements with the taxi industry and stakeholders at District level to encourage participation during Provincial Taxi Makgotla to allow for inputs, suggestions and recommendations that will now finally feed into the National Lekgotla.   The Ministry of Transport has been part of this process through and through.

The taxi industry in South Africa is no stranger to controversy and has been associated with lawlessness, violence and bad customer treatment.
Recommendations emanating from the Provincial Makgotla will be at the center of the deliberations and robust engagement expected to form the basis of a blue print and mapping of a way forward for a taxi industry of the future in South Africa.
