Three suspects nabbed with a hijacked vehicle following a shootout with police.

Yesterday, 23 June 2021, at 19:10, police officers from the Provincial Trio Task Team were conducting patrols along Mhlongo Road in Lamontville when they received information about a hijacked vehicle that was driving around in Lamontville.

The information was followed up and the area was patrolled. Police spotted the vehicle with no registration plates on Mpanza Road. A chase ensued and several shots were fired by the suspects directed at the police officers. A shoot-out ensued and the suspects were intercepted. One of the suspects alighted from the vehicle and fled into the nearby houses.

Police officers we able to arrest three suspects aged between 21 and 27. The driver of the said vehicle was injured and was taken to hospital where he is under police guard. A preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the vehicle was hijacked on Musgrave Road on 22 June 2021. Charges of attempted murder and possession of stolen property were opened at Lamontville SAPS. The suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 June 2021.
