Motorist arrested after fatally crashing into a JMPD traffic warden in Eldorado Park

02 July 2022 | From Arrive Alive

A 28-year-old male motorist was arrested on charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at an accident scene by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park.

On Saturday 02 July 2022 at about 03h00am JMPD officers and Traffic Wardens from By-Laws Management Unit were attending two accident scenes on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park.

Whilst attending to the accident scenes a beige Renault Sandero drove at a high speed hitting a 37-year-old female JMPD Traffic Warden, Luleka Sobetshe.

The driver of the Sandero then failed to stop after striking Traffic Warden Sobetshe. Officers on the scene gave chase and managed to apprehend the driver.

Emergency Services were called and unfortunately, Traffic Warden Sobetshe was declared deceased on the scene.

The driver of the Sandero was breathalyzed and the reading from the alcometer was 0.69mg/l which is over the legal limit of 0.24mg/l.

The driver was arrested and detained at Eldorado Park SAPS and he is due to appear in court during the course of the week.

JMPD Acting Chief of Police Thulani Maxwell Khanyile and the whole department send their deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Sobetshe family, friends, and colleagues. May her dear soul repose peacefully.

Issued by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department's Communications Unit
