Media and Public Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma

06 January 2025

Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: We have just received a very disturbing report from a highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate.

Initially, we reported that unfortunately between eight and ten or more have died following a horrific accident involving a truck and a taxi. The number has increased to 18 (13 adults and 5 children).

The accident happened just between 20h30 and 21h00 in Van Reenen along the N3.

We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have requested a comprehensive report from our dedicated RTI team.

We issued a statement today indicating that since last night, we have noticed an increase in road accidents along the N3, N2 and other routes as a result of heavy rainfall.

In addition, we have received reports of heavy rainfall in low lying areas. This will result in possible flooding of houses.

This morning I interacted with heads of both Departments - Siboniso Mbhele and Mdu Zungu, and I am satisfied with the plans that have been put in place to ensure that we respond with a high sense of urgency.

Transport

1. A highly dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate working with municipalities is monitoring the flow of traffic across all major routes to ensure the safety of motorists.

2. Since the 1st of January more than 10 people have died on our roads. With the rain, the roads are slippery. We are requesting motorists to be extra careful.

Human Settlements

1. Working with a team from the National Department of Human Settlements, we are currently intervening in municipalities where heavy rainfall and strong winds resulted in the destruction of houses.

2. About eight Temporary Residential Units are being procured to assist families whose houses were totally destroyed in Nkandla. Four other families will receive building material.
