As the country commemorates Human Rights long weekend, road users are reminded that safety on the roads is a human right which must be respected by observing the rules of the road .
The Road Traffic Management Corporation calls on travellers to plan their trips carefully and consider the changing weather patterns.
Consideration must also be taken of the fact that the recent heavy rains may have had a negative impact on the quality of regional and municipal roads.
This comes as traffic volumes showed a moderate increase today (Thursday 20 March 2025) as some holidaymakers started travelling to various destinations.
Travellers are further advised to consider that the change in seasons from summer to autumn also means that days are becoming shorter as darkness now falls earlier.
Therefore, travellers must plan their trips in such a way that they are able to travel during day time. The RTMC has coordinated with provincial and local authorities to ensure visible patrolling on the roads during peak times to enforce the rules of the road.
Long-distance drivers are called upon to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before commencing with their journeys and to take regular rest stops along the way to avoid fatigue.
Although law enforcement agencies will be monitoring traffic, however it is every road user’s responsibility to ensure safety on the road.
It is for this reason that the traffic fraternity has adopted a theme that says It starts with me.
It is a call for every road user to play their part to reduce crashes and fatalities by:
* driving responsibly
* ? respecting other road users.
* ?resisting drunken driving.
* ?avoiding dangerous overtaking,
* ?avoiding texting while driving,
* ?ensuring that all passengers use safety belts.
