One male suspect was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer for bribery following a motor vehicle accident in Meredale, Johannesburg South.
On Monday 21 April 2025, a JMPD officer responded to a motor vehicle accident on Main Road in Meredale involving two vehicles, a Toyota Corolla, driven by a male citizen of Ireland, and a GWM bakkie, driven by a male citizen of Zimbabwe.
During the officer's routine inquiry at the scene, the Zimbabwean national failed to produce any form of personal identification, including a passport, which was required for verification purposes.
Upon the officer's request for identification, the individual allegedly offered the officer a bribe of R260.00.
The JMPD officer immediately refused the bribe and placed the male under arrest for attempting to bribe a police officer. The suspect was detained at Mondeor SAPS. The R260.00 offered as a bribe was secured as evidence and will form part of the ongoing investigation.
The JMPD takes allegations of bribery extremely seriously and will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the integrity of our officers. This incident serves as a clear reminder that such actions will be met with the full force of the law.
The JMPD commends the vigilance and integrity of the officer involved in this incident for upholding the ethical standards of the department.
Ends.
