The Easter weekend of 2025 turned tragic for Mpumalanga, as 18 lives were lost in a series of road accidents, primarily along the N4 corridor between Emalahleni and Komatipoort.
Among the most devastating incidents were a head-on collision near Belfast and Machadodorp, which claimed six lives, and a crash on the R35 near Middelburg that resulted in the deaths of three people, including a toddler. Additionally, a minibus overturned on the N4 near Middelburg, killing two and injuring 13 others.
Authorities have cited human error as the primary cause of these accidents, with speeding, reckless driving, and dangerous overtaking being major contributing factors.
In response, law enforcement ramped up efforts over the long weekend, leading to over 100 arrests for offenses such as drunk driving, and more than 13,500 vehicles were inspected as part of road safety operations.
