
On Saturday, 26 April 2025, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane continued with their disruptive crime prevention operations by conducted Operation Shanela in the precincts of Atteridgeville and Erasmia.
Under the command of Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, a multi-stakeholder law enforcement team—including representatives from the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Department and Tshwane Metro Police Department executed the operation.
This operation resulted in the arrest of 290 suspects for various offenses, the apprehension of wanted individuals, enhanced visible policing through the deployment of additional resources and officers, and the enforcement of liquor regulations in the targeted areas.
Tshwane detectives arrested 235 suspects for various offenses, including, 77 for gender-based violence, 1 for murder, 2 for attempted murder, 3 for armed robbery, 31 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 5 for rape.
A roadblock was established in Atteridgeville, while two operational teams conducted compliance raids and law enforcement operations across the two precincts. As a result, 16 undocumented individuals were detained and are currently awaiting legal processing for deportation.
A total of 1101 individuals and 552 vehicles were searched.
Twenty-four identified premises and crime hotspots were searched and patrolled, leading to one arrest for drug possession and the confiscation of two sachets of crystal meth.
Furthermore, 1 individual was arrested and fined for public drinking and 22 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Traffic enforcement efforts included the issuance of 16 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R15 750 for violations of the Road Traffic Act.
Liquor compliance inspections involved Twenty-four establishments being inspected, with four being shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act and 482 090 ml of alcohol confiscated with 8 persons being arrested and fined for illegal gambling.
