A section of the N2 southbound highway near the KwaMashu offramp was closed this afternoon following a violent cash in transit (CIT) heist that occurred on Friday evening.
Initial reports from eyewitnesses confirmed that multiple gunshots and explosions were heard as twelve heavily armed suspects executed a coordinated attack on a CIT vehicle. The suspects, traveling in a white Toyota Hilux and a white Toyota Corolla Cross, intercepted the vehicle, disarmed the security officers on duty, and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
KZNVIP Emergency Response Teams arrived swiftly, securing the area and providing on scene assessment and support to the affected security personnel, who fortunately sustained no physical injuries. As the scene became chaotic, members of the public swarmed the area in an attempt to collect loose cash.
The incident scene has been formally handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who will continue with the investigation.
Motorists are advised that the N2 southbound near KwaMashu will remain closed for the foreseeable future as authorities process the crime scene. Commuters are urged to make alternative travel arrangements and exercise caution in the surrounding areas.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
