A 28-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a stolen vehicle on Wednesday, 11 June 2025 at approximately 11:10, at Thubelihle Location in Kriel.
According to information, the police received a tip-off about a suspicious silver Nissan Micra with no registration plates at the front and back, seen at Extension 05, Thubelihle Location. The vehicle was reportedly occupied by two males, a driver and a passenger, who were allegedly in possession of firearms.
Kriel SAPS members responded swiftly to the address. Upon arrival, they were informed that the vehicle had already left the scene. Officers then patrolled the surrounding area and spotted a vehicle matching the description parked near Thubelihle Clinic.
As the officers approached the stationary vehicle, the driver suddenly sped off. Police quickly returned to their patrol vehicle and gave chase. The suspects reportedly disobeyed all traffic regulations during the pursuit, which ended when they collided with a Toyota Quantum.
Both suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Police pursued them and managed to apprehend one suspect, who was found in possession of a firearm. Unfortunately, the second suspect evaded arrest and is still at large.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a second firearm and a knife. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen in the Mzinoni area.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear at Kriel Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 13 June 2025, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Police investigations are continuing, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the second suspect.
