Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: We wish to commend our highly motivated, efficient, and vigilant team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate for acting swiftly and ensuring the arrest of a drunk truck driver before causing a fatal accident.
The truck driver, who was transporting dangerous goods from Gauteng, was found with a blood alcohol content of 0.37%, which is high enough to cause impaired judgement, reduced coordination, and slowed reaction, especially on the N3.
The truck driver was arrested on Peter Brown’s Arrestor Bed, and the truck was impounded and kept at RTI’s Mkhondeni Testing Centre.
Undoubtedly, this truck driver would have left a trail of destruction on the roads.
We have stated in the past that horrific accidents caused by trucks have resulted in the loss of lives and caused congestion on our roads.
With the deployment of the newly recruited 177 traffic officers, we have mandated RTI to sustain Zero Tolerance and Alufakwa Campaign throughout Transport Month and beyond.
In particular, through #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation, we are determined to remove from our road networks undocumented foreign truck drivers who have a tendency of running away after causing horrific accidents.
