Tragedy struck early this morning as a devastating collision on the R34 at the Alton Road intersection in Empangeni claimed one life and left eight others injured.

At approximately 6h45, as peak commuter traffic began, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, alongside the Fire Department and the SAPS, were dispatched to the scene of a high-impact incident involving a bakkie and a car.

Emergency services arrived to a chaotic and complex scene where the two vehicles showed extensive damage, a clear testament to the sheer force of the collision. Fire and Rescue personnel worked alongside paramedics to meticulously triage and extract the numerous casualties. The area was quickly secured, with traffic flow severely impacted as multiple emergency vehicles and personnel occupied the roadside.

Despite the rapid response and extensive efforts of paramedics, one patient sadly succumbed to their fatal injuries on the scene and was declared deceased by officials.

A further eight patients sustained injuries of varying severity:
Five patients sustained serious injuries, including suspected broken bones and potentially life-altering spinal injuries. Three patients sustained minor injuries, primarily consisting of cuts and lacerations.

Paramedics stabilized all injured patients on site with advanced life support intervention before transporting them to various hospitals in the surrounding area for specialized and ongoing medical care.

The immediate cause of the collision remains unknown. The South African Police Service has taken control of the scene and has launched a formal investigation into the circumstances leading up to this fatal incident.

While the R34 was not fully closed, motorists experienced significant delays and diversions around the Alton Road intersection for several hours as the scene was cleared, and accident investigation processes were completed. KwaZulu Private Ambulance urges all road users to exercise extreme caution and patience when travelling through the area.
