The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety kicked off its 2025 Festive Season Road-Safety Campaign in Solomondale, led by MEC Violet Mathye, Head of Department Stephen Matjena, and SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. The campaign unites law-enforcement, community groups, transport stakeholders and advocacy organisations to reduce road fatalities.
MEC Mathye warned that the festive period sees spikes in traffic, alcohol misuse, speeding and fatigue. She announced intensified enforcement: 24-hour roadblocks, random breath tests, vehicle inspections, visible traffic police, and joint SAPS-community operations. “We want every road user to arrive alive. Life comes first,” she said.
Head of Department Matjena stressed collaboration and personal responsibility: “Road safety is a shared responsibility; enforcement alone isn’t enough – we need behavioural change.”
SAPS Commissioner Hadebe pledged integrated crime-prevention and road-safety actions, emphasizing visibility, compliance and swift action against offenders.
The launch featured motorist engagements, awareness drives, educational material, and demonstrations on seatbelts, safe overtaking, fatigue management and sober driving. Residents were urged to report reckless driving, overloaded taxis, unroadworthy vehicles and drunk drivers via provincial hotlines.
