The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) is pleased to inform the aviation industry, passengers, and the public that it is fully prepared to deliver efficient air traffic services during the 2025 festive season. The peak travel period is expected between 12 December 2025 and 15 January 2026, when demand will rise significantly, resulting in increased airspace complexity at most airports. During this time, ATNS will ensure that services are provided in line with air traffic demand across its various service units. The principles of safety, efficiency, and collaborative decision-making will guide operations.
ATNS further confirms that both technical capacity and human resources will be deployed across the system, implementing operating procedures similar to those successfully applied during the recently concluded G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Johannesburg in November 2025.
To facilitate seamless operations, ATNS has initiated individual engagements with airlines to maintain a continuous understanding of their requirements and the support they expect. Enhanced stakeholder engagement will serve as a key tool to mitigate risks and minimise potential air travel disruptions.
Significant progress has been made in strengthening the availability and reliability of instrument flight procedures at airports across South Africa. This advancement will enhance operational continuity and improve safety during the anticipated increase in seasonal traffic.
ATNS enters the festive season with most of South Africa’s airports well supported by updated and fully operational instrument flight procedures.
Lastly, ATNS reiterates that its peak season state of readiness will ensure the national airspace system remains robust, safe, and capable of confidently handling increased holiday demand
