ATNS Confirms Operational Readiness and Stable Peak Season Performance

13 December 2025 | From Arrive Alive

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited has confirmed its full operational readiness for the peak festive season, underscoring a strong focus on safety, service continuity, and network efficiency across South Africa’s airspace, including at the country’s busiest hub, O.R Tambo International Airport.

Throughout the year, ATNS has prioritised strengthening the integrity, availability, and reliability of instrument flight procedures across the national network, recognising their critical role in supporting safe and efficient operations during periods of high traffic demand and adverse weather conditions. As a result of these efforts, most South African airports are now supported by updated and fully operational instrument flight procedures, significantly enhancing operational resilience.

This improved capability is already delivering tangible results. ATNS has recorded stable high-volume performance at O.R Tambo International Airport, where intensified travel demand has been safely and efficiently accommodated. Recent high-traffic operational days, including yesterday’s (12 December 2025) operations and other periods of elevated demand, have demonstrated the robustness of air traffic services, systems, and procedures, all of which have performed as intended while maintaining service continuity.

As traffic volumes continue to rise toward the year-end peak, ATNS is actively managing daily demand and capacity through coordinated air traffic flow management, enhanced operational oversight at key centres, and continuous engagement with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), airline operators, and other aviation stakeholders. These collaborative efforts remain central to sustaining safe and predictable operations throughout the peak travel period.

ATNS continues to closely monitor weather conditions across terminal and en-route airspace in real time. Where necessary, safety-driven flow management measures will be applied to mitigate risk, which may result in intermittent delays. Tactical interventions will be implemented to minimise disruption while ensuring that safety remains the overriding priority.

ATNS remains committed to delivering safe, efficient, and reliable air navigation services, working in close partnership with the broader aviation sector to support a resilient, well-managed, and successful festive peak season.
