
Police in Waterval Boven are investigating an inquest following an incident in which a man was attacked and killed by pit bulls in the early hours of today, 11 February 2026.
According to information received, at approximately 05:10, police were alerted to an incident where a man had allegedly been attacked and killed by pit bulls.
Upon arrival at the scene, police and Emergency Medical Services found the lifeless body of a man lying on the road next to a scrapyard.
Preliminary investigations revealed that two pit bulls and three other dogs belong to the owner of the scrapyard. The pit bulls were reportedly found with blood on their mouths.
The victim was certified dead at the scene and was later identified by his family.
Further investigation indicates that the incident occurred at around 02:00, when the deceased was passing by the premises and the dogs allegedly escaped from the yard. Police were only alerted at approximately 05:10.
It was also established that the deceased was a patient with mental health challenges.
Investigations are ongoing.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has sent his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and urged dog owners to ensure that their animals are properly secured within their yards or premises to prevent such tragic incidents.
