?Earlier this afternoon, at approximately 16:30, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service was dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision on the R56 near the Archie Gumede Road intersection.
?Upon arrival, emergency services were met with a scene of significant destruction. A heavy-duty truck and a double-cab bakkie had collided head-on with such force that a second bakkie, unable to avoid the primary impact, crashed into the wreckage of the truck.
The initial head-on collision left the first bakkie crumpled, with two occupants violently trapped within the twisted metal. The complexity of the scene, involving three vehicles, necessitated a massive and technical rescue operation.
Paramedics conducted a rapid triage and identified a total of seven patients, two Trapped Occupants, one patient was found in critical condition, suffering from severe head trauma and traumatic amputations. The second occupant sustained serious injuries involving head and chest injuries. In the immediate vicinity of the wreckage paramedics located another patient in critical condition, while four additional patients were treated for minor injuries.
In a coordinated effort, paramedics and the Fire and Rescue Department utilized specialized hydraulic rescue equipment to stabilize the vehicles and extricate the trapped victims. The presence of the second bakkie and the heavy-duty truck added layers of complexity to the extrication, requiring precision to prevent further injury to the critically unstable patients.
SAPS officials remained on-site to secure the area and manage the scene.
The R56 was completely closed to traffic for several hours as emergency crews worked to clear the massive debris field and stabilize the injured.
All patients were stabilized on-site before being transported to various medical facilities for urgent specialized care.
Authorities are currently investigating the sequence of events that led to this devastating multi-vehicle incident.
