Western Cape: One of the main contributors to violent crime is the illegal possession of firearms. A 29-year-old man from Strand was arrested on Wednesday, 19 April 2017 in connection with a shooting incident on Saturday in Petunia Avenue, Strand where a 31-year-old man was shot.

According to reports on Saturday 15 April 2017 at about 01:00 the victim was standing in Petunia Avenue when he was shot. The injured man was transported to Tygerberg Hospital for medical treatment. The suspect had fled the scene.

Last night, 19 April 2017, during operations, police visited an address in Strand and confiscated a 9 mm pistol and ammunition. The suspect was arrested and was linked to the shooting on Saturday.

The 29-year-old man will appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court soon on counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm without a licence.

This arrest and confiscation contributed to the police’s ongoing efforts to ensure that our communities are and feel safe.
