On the N1 between Modimolle and Mookgophong at Middlefontein in the high accident zone (Waterberg district) 28 people sustained fatal injuries.
It is reported that a Freightliner Truck transporting cement had a right front tyre blow out. The driver lost control and collided head-on with oncoming traffic at about 14:58.
Multiple vehicles was crashed into. A Ford Everest SUV, an Audi lmv, a Nissan MP200 ldv, and a Midibus. The Nissan ldv caught fire.
28 people sustained fatal injuries. 27 was declared dead on scene and 1 died in hospital.
25 fatalities are from the midibus, including the driver and 2 children. It is reported that they are from the Bochum area.
2 persons sustained fatal injuries from the Ford Everest. It is reported that it was a couple from Polokwane.
The driver of the Freightliner HMV also sustained fatal injuries.
The driver and passenger of the ldv sustained slight injuries. The vehicle burned.
Specialist re-construction experts from the RTMC with SAPS specialist is investigating the accident.
