Hijackers arrested within minutes by police: Uitenhage Cluster

29 January 2019 | From Arrive Alive

Kwanobuhle: Resolute efforts by SAPS officials to meticulously address trio crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster, paid off last night, 28 January 2019, when police officials responded immediately to a hijacking that occurred at about 21:30 in Khozi Avenue, Kwanobuhle.  It is alleged that two suspects (one had a firearm) approached the 42-year-old driver of a Silver Toyota Etios, threatened him and his passenger demanded the car keys and sped off with the complainants vehicle. The Police were immediately notified and the description of the vehicle and registration was circulated by members of the Uitenhage 10111 Centre.

Alert members from the Operational Command Centre in Uitenhage noticed the vehicle and a high-speed chase ensued on the R75 in the direction of Port Elizabeth. Port Elizabeth Flying Squad members also acted swiftly and drove towards the direction of Stanford Road, Port Elizabeth where they managed to intercept the vehicle. Members from the Flying Squad arrested both male suspects, both aged 25, and recovered the complainant cellphone that was still in the vehicle.

The possibility that the suspects might be linked to other serious crimes in the Uitenhage / Port Elizabeth Clusters are under investigation. Detectives from the Vehicle Crime Identification Unit (VCIU) in Uitenhage are investigating a case of hijacking. The suspects are due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 January 2019, on the said charge.

The Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll commended the members for their swift response and vigilance in apprehending the culprits.  Brig Koll said: “Excellent communication and the swift reaction contributed towards the positive results and actions such as this improves the public’s perception that the police are doing what is expected of them, ridding the street of criminals”.  Let us share information and support each other in the fight against crime by phoning Crime Stop 08600 10111 or Crime Line SMS 32211 with your tips.
