Predicted Festive Season Traffic – Plan Your Travel Routes Accordingly

12 December 2019 | From Arrive Alive

Three main National Routes are expected to take a high influx this December:
•    N1 from Johannesburg to Cape Town
•    N3 from Johannesburg to Durban
•    N4 from Middleburg to Mozambique

N1:

Beaufort West to Laingsburg (also known as “Deaths Highway”) is known to be a concern due to the limited overtaking opportunities. Forecasted travel speeds over the festive season, specifically between 13 December to 23 December and 2 January to 5 January, is on average 80KM/H with a travel time of 2 hours 28 minutes. Most incidents occur between 02:00 - 07:00 and 15:00 - 17:00 in this section, resulting in delays of up to 2 hours.

The Huguenot Tunnel Tollgate is expected to ramp up to a maximum of 1500 vehicles per hour at peak times at the beginning of the festive season and after the New Year.

N3:

Two hotspots are expected over the festive season on the route from Johannesburg to Durban, namely Van Reenen's Pass and Marian Hill.

Van Reenen's Pass is expected to be free-flowing with an average speed of 77KM/H; however, this will reduce at peak times to 56KM/H (07:00 – 09:00 and 15:00 – 19:00) between 14 December to 23 December and 2 December to 5 December.

Due to the risk of Heavy-Duty Vehicles breaking down on this high gradient route, delays of up to 45 minutes on average can be expected during lane closures in the case of an incident. Consider using the Little Switzerland R74 alternative should an accident or incident occur during your travels.

Marian Hill, known for the Marian Toll Plaza, is renowned for the highest volume of traffic per hour through the Toll Plaza. On average, Marian Toll Plaza will process more than 1700 vehicles per hour during peak, with a delay of 23 – 45 minutes between 13 December to 23 December 2019 and 2 January to 5 January 2020.

N4:

Delays of up to 1 hour are forecasted at the Lebombo Border Post from 16 December through to 24 December 2019.

2018 reported frequent fog spots in the Belfast district resulting in vehicle accidents and average speeds of 89KM/H.
