Excellent collaboration and quick activation of members of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (Port Elizabeth), National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team and Crime Intelligence resulted in the speedy arrest of one suspect and the recovery of beer worth over R500 000.
It is alleged that on Friday, 25/09 at about 04:50, Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (Prov:OCI) members received information of a possible hijacked brewery truck being offloaded at an unused building in Xhama Street in NU 12B in Motherwell. On receiving the said information, the teams immediately activated and responded.
On arrival at the address, a group of approximately 20-25 males ran away however a 28 year old suspect was arrested. Police found a jamming device still connected to the battery inside the truck.
It is further alleged that at about 04:30, the driver was on his way to Lady Frere when he was stopped on the N2 Freeway near Blue Water Bay by two unknown males in a white VW Polo. He was held at gunpoint by the two men and taken to the VW Polo. One suspect drove the truck while the other dropped him off in Missionvale.
Pallets of beers were already offloaded from the truck while some were taken into the abandoned building. All the beer as well as the truck and two trailers were recovered.
More arrests are expected and the suspect was detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking. He is expected to appear in the Motherwell magistrates’ court on Monday, 28/09.
