One victim airlifted in multi-truck road crash on the N3, Pinetown

05 August 2022 | From Arrive Alive

At18h30 Friday evening, Meditech Emergency Response received multiple reports of an accident on the N3 South Bound before the Marianhill Toll Plaza, after the Shongweni bridge. Reports indicated that multiple trucks (including a petrol tanker) had collided with all engulfed in flames.

Meditech Emergency Response, together with multiple other emergency services, including the SAPS Search and Rescue, Durban Metropolitan Search and Rescue, Ethekwini Fire Department, and the Traffic Department responded to the scene.

Upon our Paramedic's arrival on the scene, it was found that the whole N3 South Bound was closed off due to the accident. One male patient was found to have sustained serious injuries and was stabilized on the scene. Due to the nature of the injuries sustained, a decision was made to active the Netcare911 Medical Helicopter to airlift the injured patient to a definitive care center to receive the treatment he will require.

Due to the South Bound being severely affected, with traffic being backed up for many kilometers, a decision was made to close off the N3 North Bound temporarily for Meditech Emergency Response Paramedics to await the arrival of the Medical Helicopter.

Once the patient was airlifted, the North Bound was reopened for traffic.

At this stage, it is believed that the driver of the petrol tanker lost all break functions of the truck as it passed the Shongweni Bridge which resulted in him crashing into multiple other trucks.

The Ethekwini Fire Department remains on scene battling the blaze.

It is expected that the N3 South Bound will remain closed for some time, so motorists are urged to use the M13 as major delays are expected.
