On the morning of Thursday, 31 August 2023, tragically, a fire claimed the lives of at least 73 individuals, including one child, and left more than 43 people injured. The number of casualties is expected to rise as the situation unfolds.
This tragic incident occurred at a five-story Osindiso building located on the corner of Alberts and Delvers streets in Johannesburg's Marshalltown area. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
In response, the Gift of the Givers team swiftly intervened to provide assistance to the courageous firefighters on the scene. They are offering support in the form of rehydration and energy-enriched foods to sustain them.
The team is currently delivering essential supplies, including energy bars, energy drinks, bottled water, and enriched lunches.
They stand ready to respond further, awaiting guidance from disaster management on the extent of the disaster and how best they can assist those affected.
