Patrolling Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) First Responder Unit (FRU) Officers, drove into a crash involving a pedestrian, on the Andrew Mapheto Drive in front of St. Gamma's Primary School in Thembisa.
It is alleged that a tipsy 33-year-old female driver, travelling from south to northerly direction, on the Andrew Mapheto Drive, in a charcoal VW Jetta sedan with four (4) passengers, somehow failed to treat a non-functional traffic light/robot as the stop sign and knocked over a male pedestrian crossing the roadway, who landed next to the palisade fence, of the primary school.
On arrival, EMPD Officers found few patients including the pedestrian, lying down on the side of the roadway while some injured were still inside the sedan. Medical experts were summoned to the scene and the patients were transported to different medical facilities, for medical care. Four (4) VW occupants including the driver, sustained slight injuries and a male passenger, who was seated on the front left seat plus a pedestrian, sustained serious injuries following the crash, according to the Paramedics.
On closer inspection, Officers smelled a strong odour of liquor from the female driver. The breathalyzer test was immediately conducted, and the reading from the device used to determine the level of alcohol intake, came out very high and the intoxicated motorist was handcuffed. A registered Medical Practitioner, was summoned on-site and a blood specimen was drawn from the arm of the lawbreaker, before she was marched to the Thembisa South police station.
The wrongdoer, facing charges of ‘driving while under the influence of alcohol or an intoxicating substance’, is expected to appear at the Thembisa Magistrate Court soon. Her damaged charcoal VW Jetta, was impounded at the Thembisa South police station for safekeeping.
