The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) expresses its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of MPO Ronald Tshepo Masubelele, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty today, 30 June 2024.

MPO Masubelele, along with MPO Phillipus Mahwayi, were stationed at Region A Operations. While conducting a routine roadside check on Malibongwe Drive, they attempted to pull over a white Hyundai H1 that failed to stop.

In their pursuit of the vehicle, their patrol vehicle was involved in a collision with a white Mercedes-Benz at the intersection of Malibongwe Drive and R114, Nooitgedacht. MPO Masubelele, at the age of 32, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. MPO Mahwayi, 33, sustained serious injuries but was treated and released from hospital.

The driver and passenger of the Mercedes-Benz were fortunately unharmed in the incident. A case of culpable homicide will be opened at Muldersdrift SAPS for investigation.

The JMPD is deeply saddened by the loss of MPO Masubelele. His dedication and commitment to serving the City of Johannesburg will be sorely missed. We offer our unwavering support to MPO Mahwayi as he recovers from his injuries.
