One woman has died and 57 others left injured when a truck carrying farm workers overturned and crashed into an embankment in the Hela Hela area near Richmond in KZN on Wednesday morning.
Mi7 National Group's Emergency Medical Services dispatched several ambulances and rapid response medical teams to the area after initial reports of the crash came in just before 7am. They joined several other service providers from across the region in responding.
It is believed a truck was carrying almost 60 farm workers - all of whom were female - along a district gravel road in Hela Hela when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and crash into an embankment.
One woman was declared deceased by paramedics while several teams coordinated the treatment and or transport to hospital of 57 other women injured in the crash - with injuries ranging from minor to critical.
Mi7 Advanced Life Support medics were stabilising one patient in critical condition who eventually had to be airlifted by a Netcare helicopter to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg. Mi7 medics in total transported 14 patients to several hospitals and medical facilities for further treatment.
Police were on scene to investigate further.
We wish all those injured a successful recovery and pass our condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.
We also applaud the combined team effort and efficient coordination displayed by all service providers in attendance.
