Inter-district anti-stock theft operation yields positive results

A coordinated anti-stock theft operation conducted across three neighbouring district; Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi, and OR Tambo, from 13 to 17 May 2025, has led to the recovery of suspected stolen livestock. Authorities are awaiting the lawful owners to come forward for identification and claims. 

The operation targeted high-risk areas, including Qumbu, Sulenkama, Tsolo kwaBhaca, Maclear, Tloekeng (Matatiele), and Ngqayi (Katkop), with active participation from affected communities. 

Recovered livestock awaiting identification include:

231 mixed cattle (estimated value: R2, 772,000) 
81 mixed sheep (estimated value: R162, 000) 
78 goats (estimated value: R156, 000) 
The cattle are held at the Qumbu Municipality Stock Pound, while sheep and goats are kept at the Tsolo Municipality Stock Pound. 

Additional successes during the operation:

A 27-year-old male suspect from Mahlungulu, Qumbu, was arrested near the N2 Sulenkama junction while driving a Toyota Avanza suspected to be stolen. The vehicle had a Soweto case number from April 2025. 
Traffic fines totalling R9, 500 were issued for offenses including driving without a license and operating unroadworthy vehicles. 
Compliance inspections were conducted at three butcheries in Lusikisiki. 
Owners of stolen livestock are urged to visit the Qumbu Stock Pound (for cattle) or Tsolo Stock Pound (for sheep and goats) with valid stock ownership documentation for verification through the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit. 

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso commended the joint efforts of the three districts, emphasizing the dedication of SAPS members in combating stock theft. The respective District Commissioners reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating this crime in their jurisdictions.
