The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirms that a total of 157 motorists were arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol during a concentrated week of operations.
The arrests were made between Monday, 29 September 2025, and Sunday, 05 October 2025, across all regions of the City of Johannesburg.
This figure highlights the ongoing threat that intoxicated drivers pose to the safety of all road users and reaffirms the JMPD’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against drunk driving.
JMPD Acting Chief of Police, Acting Commissioner Eldred Fortein, praised the officers for their diligence and issued a stern warning to the public.
"The arrest of 157 individuals in a single week for a preventable offence is deeply concerning. Every single person arrested made a conscious choice to endanger not only their own life but the lives of innocent pedestrians and other motorists," said Acting Commissioner Fortein.
"Our officers have been highly visible, conducting intensified roadblocks and proactive patrols throughout the city, and these numbers send a clear message, if you drink and drive in Johannesburg, you will be caught, and you will face the full might of the law."
All arrested suspects will be processed through the judicial system to face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
We appeal to the public to always designate a sober driver, make use of public transport, taxis, or e-hailing services, and if you have consumed any amount of alcohol, do not get behind the wheel.
The JMPD remains committed to reducing road fatalities and injuries and will continue to intensify its operations to ensure a safer road network for all residents of Johannesburg.
