Limpopo MEC warns against drunk driving

The MEC for Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye welcomes residents and visitors alike as Polokwane gears up for a weekend of celebration. From Friday onward the city buzzes with the 2025 Annual Festive Lights Celebrations in Civic Centre Park, the Metro FM Heatwave at the cricket ground and the sold-out Carling Black-Label  final between Pirates and Marumo Gallants – a true provincial festivity.

Travellers arriving from other provinces for the Heatwave concert and the soccer showdown find a province ready to keep them safe. The department launches the Festive Season Road-Safety Campaign, building on yesterday’s unveiling of 79 new law-enforcement vehicles – 53 for Limpopo Traffic and 26 for the South African Police Service. The expanded fleet puts officers on every major corridor and throughout Polokwane, ensuring visible policing wherever the crowds gather.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Susana Violet Mathye, warns that driving under the influence of alcohol will not be tolerated, especially during this joyous period. She reminds motorists that the new vehicles mean officers are everywhere, from the N1 to the streets surrounding Civic Centre Park, and that the Phuza Weekend operations are intensified in line with the campaign launch.

She urges all road users – whether they are local commuters or visitors from elsewhere – to arrive alive, to remember that their families need them, to avoid even a single drink before getting behind the wheel, to rest every two hours, to check tyres, brakes and lights, to slow down and to buckle up at all times. She also calls on the public to cooperate with officers and to report reckless behaviour through the provincial hotlines, emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility.
