The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) conducted successful operations over the weekend, targeting public transport violations, drunk driving and crime prevention to ensure that all road users and public transport users are safe on the road.

On 10 January 2026, TMPD Tactical Unit members were conducting their patrol duties when they stopped a vehicle for a routine check of the vehicle and driver, and discovered that the driver had a firearm in his possession. Upon further testing it was discovered that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and he was immediately placed under arrest.

TMPD Public Transport Unit members carried out a public transport operation on 10 January 2026 at Citron and Dr WF Nkomo Street in Lotus Gardens, Pretoria West. The operation focused on law enforcement and 15 vehicles operating for reward were impounded after being found in violation of the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act 93 of 1996).

Another public transport operation was conducted on 11 January 2026 by Public Transport Unit members focusing on the National Land Transport Act, 2009 (Act 5 of 2009) at the R55 and Drakensberg Road. During the operation, a total of 11 vehicles were impounded and 18 AARTO 1 infringement notices were issued.

Furthermore, drunk driving operations were carried out in separate locations on 10 January 2026. One operation was conducted by Region 2 members at Sefako Makgatho Drive and Ruspolia Road where 12 drunk drivers were nabbed in the act of driving under the influence of alcohol and 31 AARTO 1 notices were issued.

In another location on the same day, a parallel drunk driving operation was held at the N14 and N1 (Braamfontein interchange) focusing on driver fitness and crime prevention. The operation resulted in the arrest of three drunk drivers. A further 13 pedestrians were arrested by the Pedestrian Unit who were caught jaywalking on freeways during the weekend.

Well done to all the members involved!
