High Calibre Armed Suspects Open Fire on SAPS Patrol Vehicle, Newlands West
23 January 2026 | From Arrive Alive

Armed suspects wielding high calibre firearms opened fire on a patrolling South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle in the Newlands West area on Thursday evening.
The incident follows a reported hijacking on Firwood Road, where an Isuzu bakkie was taken by armed suspects.
While conducting patrols in the area, SAPS members encountered the hijacked vehicle travelling along an informal roadway adjacent to VN Naik School. As police members approached, the suspects opened fire on the SAPS vehicle. Officers immediately alighted from the vehicle and sought cover, narrowly avoiding injury.
Multiple bullet impacts were later observed on the police vehicle. The suspects fled the scene on foot, moving through nearby informal settlements and crossing into the KwaMashu area. A search operation was conducted however, the suspects managed to evade arrest.
No injuries were reported. SAPS investigations into the hijacking and attempted murder of police officers are ongoing.
