The Durban Metro Police Service Tracing Unit, working in close collaboration with Crime Intelligence, successfully executed an intelligence-driven operation in the Tongaat policing area, leading to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of multiple unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Acting on information received, members followed up on intelligence regarding an individual suspected to be involved in the hiring out of firearms and ammunition to criminal elements in and around Tongaat. The suspect’s movements had been under observation since December 2025, allowing for confirmation of ongoing suspicious activities.
On Friday, 03 April 2026, operational members proceeded to the identified area and, with the assistance of Crime Intelligence, tactically intercepted the suspect’s vehicle along Railway Street, opposite Shoprite. Upon engagement, the suspect granted permission for a search after members identified themselves and presented official appointment cards.
During the search, one 38 Special revolver and six live rounds were found in the suspect’s possession. The suspect failed to produce a valid licence at the time and led members to his residence, where further searches were conducted.
Additional firearms, including a 303 rifle and a shotgun with defaced serial numbers, were recovered along with a significant quantity of ammunition of various calibres. The firearm safe on the premises was found to be non-compliant, unsecured, and without a key.
A total of three firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition were seized and booked into the SAP13 register. The suspect was arrested and charged for unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms, unlawful possession of ammunition, and contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
The suspect was detained at Ndwedwe South African Police Service Station under the relevant case docket, and investigations are ongoing.
This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the continued commitment of the Durban Metro Police Service to remove illegal firearms from circulation and enhance public safety.
