The National Traffic Police (NTP) together with provincial authorities, Metros and Municipal authorities will be intensifying roadblocks, patrols and operations on major arterial routes over the two long weekends to avert incidents that may be caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol. The RTMC is extremely worried about reckless behaviour on the roads as the long weekends fall during pay day.
The road safety agency calls upon motorists to prioritise safety on the roads to ensure that the country eliminates avoidable crashes that claim lives of innocent victims. This comes as the country will be celebrating Freedom Day, on the 27th of April and Workers Day on the 1st of May, which falls on a weekend creating two long weekends.
Youth related road crashes and injuries constitute a major health challenge and exert a heavy burden on the economy and social infrastructure. Motorists between the ages of 20 and 39 years are more likely to drink and drive and cause a crash that may injure them or lead to a fatality.
The carnage we continue to experience on our roads is influenced by several factors mostly embedded in human behaviour (Drunk Driving) or negative attitudes, vehicle factors as well as environment or road factors.
Drinking and driving is a criminal offence, and perpetrators could face heavy penalties or even imprisonment if a death occurs because of drunk driving. That conviction stays on a motorists record for over 10 years affecting chances of entering the job market, travel visas and may affect an individual’s ability to obtain vehicle insurance.
