KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service responded to a scene of absolute destruction yesterday evening following a violent head-on collision on the R56, in the immediate vicinity of the Southgate Superspar in Pietermaritzburg.
The emergency call was received at approximately 17:30, upon arrival, emergency crews were confronted with a chaotic scene. Two light motor vehicles had collided head-on with immense force, the momentum of the impact sending one of the vehicles careening off the roadway where it smashed into a tree, trapping the occupant within the mangled wreckage.
Paramedics immediately initiated a rapid triage assessment of the victims under highly volatile conditions.
?The driver of the vehicle that struck the tree sustained severe, multi-system trauma. Advanced life support paramedics stabilized the patient on-scene, treating suspected spinal injuries and multiple complex bone fractures. The stabilization process required precise clinical intervention before the patient could be safely extricated and immobilized. Once stabilized, the patient was rushed under emergency conditions to a nearby hospital for specialized definitive care.
?Remarkably, the driver of the second vehicle miraculously escaped the structural devastation of their cabin entirely uninjured.
?The scene required a tightly coordinated multi-agency response to manage the underlying hazards. The local Fire Department and Traffic Department arrived swiftly on-scene, working alongside paramedics to secure the perimeter and mitigate any immediate wreckage risks.
Despite the severity of the impact and the presence of emergency vehicles, traffic flow on the R56 was successfully managed and was not significantly affected.
?The exact cause of the collision remains undetermined at this stage and is currently under investigation by local authorities.
