At approximately 07:00, emergency dispatchers received reports of a severe motor vehicle crash on the R56 routing towards Pietermaritzburg. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service units, alongside local authorities, were immediately routed to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics were confronted with a heavily compromised vehicle showing massive frontal and cabin damage resulting from the impact with the animal.
The occupants of the vehicle—a grandfather and his high school-aged granddaughter—were en route from their home to town, a journey intended to drop the teenager at school before the adult proceeded to the hospital for life-sustaining dialysis treatment. The routine trip was abruptly shattered when the stray cow stepped into the path of their vehicle, leaving the driver no time to take evasive action.
Paramedics quickly triaged two patients at the scene:
Adult Male (Driver): Sustained multiple, severe systemic injuries. Advanced Life Support paramedics worked aggressively to stabilize the patient on-scene, utilizing specialized medical interventions to manage trauma complications before transporting him rapidly to a nearby tertiary hospital for urgent specialist care.
Female Minor (Front Passenger): Suffered minor physical injuries but was covered in shattered windshield glass and experiencing severe acute psychological shock. She was treated on-scene and transported for further medical evaluation and emotional support.
Emergency operations necessitated the closure of one traffic lane for approximately one hour. This closure caused significant traffic gridlock during the peak morning rush as emergency crews worked meticulously to extricate the vehicle and clear the wreckage. The roadway has since been fully reopened.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service urges livestock owners to ensure their boundaries are secure, as stray animals remain a critical threat to motorist safety across KZN roads.
