Free State MEC for Health cautions drivers to be extra cautious on our roads

The Free State MEC for Health, Montseng Tsiu has sent a message of condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured in the two separate tragic accidents that happened in the Free State this weekend.

These accidents happened on the opposite ends of the province, one on the Far East end of the Province whilst the other happened on the South end of the Province.

The first accident at about 04:40 am was of a 22 seater which got involved in a head on collision with a truck on the N1 South of Bloemfontein near Toms Place. This one resulted in 8 persons being declared dead on scene whilst 3 sustained Critical injuries with 1 person being airlifted to hospital, 4 sustained Moderate injuries and 16 sustained Minor injuries.

The send accident was on the R103, 5km from Villiers to Cornelia where a Truck Collided with a car and left 4 persons being declared dead on scene and 1 person with Minor injuries being admitted in a hospital.

"Accidents are one of the leading causes of death in our country and a major contributor to destabilizing the coherence of our societal structures. The resilience of families is broken down because accidents often lead to orphanisation of children whose parents die and widowisation of men or women that die" said Tsiu.

"Those who get injuries do not often become productive economically after these accidents. In my capacity as the MEC of Health, I plead with all road users to be extra cautious and avoid accidents by all means" emphasized Tsiu.

She further reminded the nation about the fundamental things that must be avoided before you can take a road trip. She said Do not drink and drive, Rest every 2 hours or 200 kms, do not take medication that would make you drowsy before a road trip if you're a driver, take your hypertension medication well on time, drink enough water to keep you awake and alert. Visit your Clinic, Doctor or any Health facility to check and know your status so that you may not be attacked by stroke or High and Low Blood Pressures. #ArriveAlive #ArriveHealthy #Chekaimpilo #KnowYourStatus
