Two people were killed and four people were seriously injured and another sustained moderate injuries when an Audi collided into a group of men in the early hours of this morning in Pietermaritzburg.

Paramedics initially received the incident as a truck that lost its load in Northdale. When paramedics arrived on the scene the situation appeared to be completely different. Bystanders on the scene explained to paramedics that a group of men were busy offloading cargo from a truck when a vehicle collided with them.

Paramedics found two men with multiple fatal injuries on the scene. Another four sustained multiple injuries and Advanced Life Support paramedics had to stabilise them on the scene before they could be rushed off to a nearby hospital for further specialist treatment. Paramedics also found a man with moderate injuries. Most of the men sustained multiple fractures with one of them that sustained a partial amputation of his leg.
Another bystander explained to paramedics that members of the community through rocks at the Audi after the accident. Paramedics could not identify the driver of the vehicle on the scene and it is not clear if one of the injured or deceased was the driver of the Audi.

It is not clear what led to the incident. The local authorities attended the scene and will conduct an investigation.
