Earlier today KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics responded to a case on the N2 highway, between the R102 Link road and the Mandeni toll plaza.
When paramedics arrived on scene they found a car on the side of the road, but with little damage to the car. When they assessed the driver, an elderly man estimated to be in his late sixties, they found that he had sadly already passed away.
Passing motorists who had seen the car leave the road and who had stopped to assist the man told paramedics that the man said he had stopped on the side of the road and was picking fruit from a tree on the side of the road, when he was attacked by a swarm of bees. The man had been stung multiple times. He then ran to his car and drove away. He had apparently managed to drive about one kilometre before leaving the road, which is where the passers-by found him and called EMS.
The police were also on the scene and will be investigating to confirm the exact cause of the man’s death.

This is a pic of the scene where the man died earlier today from the bee stings. The vehicle is about 100m off the road. Turns out a second person has survived. A man aged 19 years, a friend was picking fruit with the man when the bees attacked but he was left behind when the man drove off. He has treated by kznems paramedics and taken to a local clinic.
