Driver ploughs into children in Western Cape, boy dies

A man has handed himself over to police after he allegedly drove into a group of children, killing a 3-year old boy, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

"A 22-year old male suspect was arrested [today] in connection with the accident. The suspect handed himself over to police," said Constable Jerome Voegt.

Around 14:00 on Tuesday a vehicle drove into three pedestrians - a 9-year old girl, a 14-year old girl and the 3-year old boy,.

When police arrived on the scene they found the boy's lifeless body. The two girls were taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Witnesses said the vehicle crashed into the children and then the driver drove away.

Voegt said the arrested man will appear before the Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court on Thursday, facing charges relating to culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
