Scores of Soshanguve taxi drivers experienced a Black Friday today when law enforcement authorities removed scores of unroadworthy vehicles from the road.In a massive pre-dawn crackdown, the National Traffic Police, National Traffic Ant-Corruption Unit, Tshwane Metro Police and South African Police, conducted checks on local taxis operating in Soshanguve.
The operation, called public transport identified vehicles that were operating without proper permits, unroadworthy and suspected stolen vehicles and drivers who operate without driving licence and public driving permits. A total of 264 local taxis were removed from the road and inspected for defects and compliance with road regulations.
Fines were issued in terms of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences for cracked windscreens, expired vehicle licence discs and driving without driving licence and operating public transport without a professional driving permit.Eighteen vehicles were impounded for various defects and one driver was arrested for possession of fraudulent documents.
Similar operations will be intensified as the country enters the festive season to ensure safety on the roads and to save lives.
