High-density operations result in the arrest of 2 379 suspects and the seizure of firearms and ammunition across Limpopo

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has intensified its fight against violent and organised crime through sustained high-density operations, resulting in the arrest of 2 379 suspects and the seizure of firearms and ammunition across the province.

The arrests were effected during Operation Shanela, conducted from Monday, 10 August until Sunday, 16 August 2026, in collaboration with various law-enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders.

The seizure of four firearms and 16 rounds of ammunition is among the key highlights of the operations, as police continue to target illegal weapons that can be used to commit serious and violent crimes.

The operations included high-visibility patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, vehicle check points, compliance inspections and other crime-prevention activities.

The suspects were arrested for a range of serious and other offences, including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, robbery, sexual offences, burglary, malicious damage to property, drug-related crimes, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, liquor-related offences and contraventions of the Domestic Violence Act.

Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, welcomed the operational successes, particularly the seizure of firearms and ammunition, which he described as an important intervention in preventing violent crime.

Lieutenant General Scheepers commended the men and women in blue, together with their law-enforcement partners, for their continued efforts to remove illegal weapons, drugs and other illicit commodities from communities.

“Every firearm removed from the hands of criminals is a potential violent crime prevented. We will continue to intensify operations that target illegal firearms and those who use them to threaten the safety and security of our communities,” said Lieutenant General Scheepers.

The Provincial Commissioner further urged members of the public to support the police by reporting criminal activities and providing information that could assist in identifying suspects, locating illegal firearms and disrupting criminal networks.

Some of the arrested suspects have already started appearing before various Magistrate’s Courts.
