The incident happened on Sunday at the corner of Umvumvu and Red Ivory Streets, after a burst water pipe caused the excavation to fill with approximately 1.4 metres of water.
Gauteng Water Police, together with Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services, responded to the scene after receiving reports of the drowning. Divers were deployed and sadly recovered the child's body from the water.
The body was handed over to Protea SAPS, who have opened an inquest docket and are continuing with investigations.
PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE URGED TO TAKE EXTRA CARE
Open excavations, dams, rivers and other bodies of water can become extremely dangerous, especially for children. Please do not allow children to play near open water or unattended excavation sites.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may assist the investigation to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop: 08600 10111.
Our sincere condolences go out to the child's family, friends and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.
May his family find strength during this difficult time.
