Approximately 15 children have been injured this morning when a taxi and light motor vehicle collided at the Beyers Naude and CR Swart Road intersection in Randpark Ridge.
When ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene, they found the taxi and light motor vehicle on the side of the road. The entire front and side of the taxi had been completely smashed open.
Several children were found either seated on the sidewalk or walking around on the scene.
Paramedics assessed the patients and found that approximately 15 children, aged between 4 and 6, had sustained minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the light was found to have sustained moderate injuries and was trapped in her vehicle, which lay on its side.
Rescue services used the jaws-of-life equipment to free the woman from the vehicle.
Once freed, paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported them to various provincial hospitals for urgent treatment.
The exact cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
